Shortening prayer during a journey

Ibn al-Mundhir and others have transmitted an Ijmaa that there is no shortening of the morning [fajr] prayer nor the maghrib prayer.

al-Nawawi said: The majority have said that one is allowed to shorten the prayer in every permissible journey.

Some of the Salaf said that fear during travel is a condition for shortening the prayer.

Some said that shortening the prayer is only allowed if one is traveling for Hajj, Umrah, or Jihaad.

Abu Hanifah and al-Thawri have said one can shorten prayer in every journey whether the journey is one of obedience or disobedience.
