Make dua but do not be a transgressor

Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors.

[Qur'aan 7:55]

To be a transgressor includes asking for things which are not allowed such as that Allaah give you the rank of the Prophets or help you in acts of kufr.

Additionally, one needs to keep the following narration in mind when making dua.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Mughaffal:

Abdullah heard his son praying to Allah: O Allah, I ask Thee a white palace on the right of Paradise when I enter it. He said: O my son, ask Allah for Paradise and seek refuge in Him from Hell-Fire, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) say: In this community there will be some people who will exceed the limits in purification as well as in supplication.

[Sunan Abi Dawud 96]

Narrated Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari:

We were in the company of Allah's Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) (during Hajj). Whenever we went up a high place we used to say: "None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is Greater," and our voices used to rise, so the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "O people! Be merciful to yourselves (i.e. don't raise your voice), for you are not calling a deaf or an absent one, but One Who is with you, no doubt He is All-Hearer, ever Near (to all things).

[Sahih al-Bukhari 2992]
