Follow the Messenger of Allaah
Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger; but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged. And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided. And there is not upon the Messenger except the [responsibility for] clear notification."
[Qur'aan 25:54]
Say, "Obey Allah and obey the Messenger;
This means you are to obey the Book [i.e. the Qur'aan] of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam).
but if you turn away - then upon him is only that [duty] with which he has been charged, and upon you is that with which you have been charged
If you are to turn away and refuse to accept and act upon from that which he (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) calls you toward then you need to know that the only obligation upon the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) is to convey clearly the message that Allaah gave him.
The obligation that Allaah has laid upon you is to accept the message and to act upon it. You are to follow the Commands of Allaah and stay clear of those things He has made impermissible.
And if you obey him, you will be [rightly] guided.
If you obey the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) you will be rightly guided because he calls you to the rightly guided path.
