Bring a Suurah if you are truthful

And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah , if you should be truthful.

[Qur'aan 2:23]

Imaam al-Tabari writes that the scholars of Qur'aanic interpretation have differed in regards to the portion of the Verse which reads:

A group of scholars are of the view that this portion "produce a surah the like thereof" means

a surah from the like of this Qur'aan which is true and there is no falsehood in it and nor any lies.

Another group is of the opinion that this portion of the Verse means:

produce a Suurah [coming] from a human like Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) because Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) is a human like you.

Imaam al-Tabari adopts that the first view is the correct one.
